What is Surveillance Detection? 

Surveillance Detection (SD) is a proactive security methodology that emphasizes early on prevention of attacks. Hostiles (terrorists and criminals) spend time planning their attacks. Part of this planning involves conducting surveillance on their targets in order to collect the necessary information to pull off successful attacks. People who are trained in SD learn how to detect the hostiles while they are in this phase of the attack cycle. SD trained individuals/teams know where, when and what to look for in terms of surveillance activities, indicators, and suspicious behaviors.  

How will my company benefit from Surveillance Detection training? 

Imagine if your company had its own legal, internal intelligence operation that would provide real-time information on threats? By training either a designated SD team or even by training your current security officers and key employees in surveillance detection, you can legally and cost-effectively collect information on any hostiles who may be targeting your campus. This information will be entered into an internal database and analyzed by trained SD operators. Should your security forces detect surveillance activity, you then involve the proper authorities (law enforcement, government agencies) for assistance, rather than hoping that their efforts will protect your company from afar. By taking proactive steps in real time and on-site to avoid being attacked, you control the security of your campus. In addition, SD is a force multiplier in that it exponentially increases the effectiveness of all other security efforts you have in place. 

We cannot ignore that the private sector was attacked on September 11, 2001. At that time most of the surveillance detection training was focused on protecting our overseas government assets and personnel; almost no one in the private sector was using SD in this country. Interestingly though, an Al Qaeda operative was conducting surveillance on the financial institutions in New Jersey and New York in 2000. Guess what was on some of the video tapes and on his laptop (which weren’t discovered until 2004)? You got it: indicators that the World Trade Center was a target and information on using airplanes in attacks against this country. Imagine if he had been detected in real-time (in 2000) while conducting surveillance… 

Tell me about SDConsultants…who are your instructors? 

SDConsultants is an LLC located in the state of Missouri. All of our instructors have years of experience standing up and training surveillance detection teams worldwide in the efforts against global terrorism. Our instructors come from military and security backgrounds and most hold US government security clearances. SDConsultants is owned and operated by Laura Clark, co-author of Surveillance Detection, The Art of Prevention.
